After the flood

Micro-lubrication Systems from Tecnolub of Belgium, available in the UK through MacInnes Tooling, used very small quantities of lubricant and are generally used as a replacement for flood coolant. Very high quality vegetable base cutting oil is held in a small container and fed by gravity to a micro-pump. The output from the pump is adjustable from 0 to 30 cubic mm per stroke. Oil droplets from the pump are carried in a steam of air to the nozzle on the machine and directed at the cutting zone. This is not a mist system - the oil is supplied as droplets and no mist is created.

The benefits of the system include a huge drop in fluid consumption, typically up to a 90% reduction; reduced volume of fluids for disposal - almost no fluid maintenance; no bacteria or fungal growth in coolant tanks; and increased machining performance through improved lubrication and cooling. Tests have shown that compared to flood coolant spraying a mix of air and coolant can reduce the temperature at the cutting zone by 8°. The removal of the flood coolant allows the operator to have a clear view of the cutting zone; and the increased performance combined with better tool life means a quick return on investment

Systems can be supplied for simple microswitch or manual actuation or for full integration into a CNC control system, with coolant collars and a chip blast system to clear the swarf.
